The existing porch on this River Forest home was in disrepair and the homeowners wanted a new one rebuilt but with upgraded attention in the details on the millwork and mouldings on the newel posts and rails. I presented design drawings which then had to be approved by the city to move forward with a building permit. The newel posts, caps and rails were built in the shop with a coat of oil based primer inside and out to prevent moisture from getting in down the line. Every year I rebuild a handful of newel posts, usually because they have rotted from the inside out. The priming helps prevent that. The rest was built on site and the homeowners tackled the finish painting themselves. (Click on the right side of photos to scroll through different detail views of the project).
