The couple who commissioned this window seat were looking for a custom piece to fill the beveled front bay of their vintage graystone on Chicago’s north side, a place to relax and read and more seating for parties. We started by first taping out the floor and then making a rough model out of fitted foam board stacked on boxes. This is a process I’ve used many times and it’s a great help in visualizing for both my client and myself. I presented design drawings and went straight into finish carpentry. There are two interior clear polyurethane finished birch veneer storage boxes with a large single fitted lid with soft close hinges. Existing baseboard mouldings were matched and integrated into the design. Two weeks of shop work with four days of on site carpentry installation. Spray finished with Benjamin Moore Advance satin alkyd for a super smooth surface. A challenging piece to fit and very cool to build.
